Time is like a River...

No river can return to its source yet all rivers must have a beginning. The Chobe's source in South Central Africa flows through Angola and Namibia's Caprivi Strip into the Linyanti Swamp, before travelling east, becoming the Chobe and flowing into the Zambezi. Kasane, Botswana's most northern town is a hub of activity. Its Chobe National Park is renowned for it's large elephant herd's and the river is a great place to view them

The river flows towards the corner of 4 countries - Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe - the only occurance in the world

The magestic african fish eagle
We book a river safari with Flame of Africa. Our guide meets us at the jetty and we cast off after introductions. MJ turns out to be a fantastic guide, we have the boat to ourselves and our trip is such a contrast to a previous safari taken some years back

A monitor lizard tasting the air

A wattled lapwing foraging

A croc slides silently past us

Antelope are constantly on the alert

Baby elle can't be more than a couple of weeks old and suckles as mom drinks

Southern Giraffe are found here. Interestingly, the Angolan Giraffe occur further south in the central Kalahari region

Further downstream a family rush to the river. Their delight at reaching the water is palpable

The joy in baby's behaviour is wonderful to watch!

And then they head off for a mud bath

Giving himself a spa treatment

A giant stalks off

A yellowbilled stork keeps a eye on the croc

Is he chuckling at evading the croc?

Brothers in arms - or horns

Still further up river we hit jackpot, unfortunately not so for the poor elephant

Crocs try to move in on the kill

The lions won't let the croc near

One brother has had his fill

The other won't surrender the prize

What a spectacular couple of hours. There were a number of boats around the lions but each guide brought his tourists in for a while then moved off to allow the next boat in. Such courtesy and respect is not usually found when viewing game. Thank you MJ for making this a remarkable experience
An Indian dinner ends our short stay in kasane. Tomorrow we're off to Livingstone and the Vic Falls
