A strange thing happened standing on a deck in our very private piece of wilderness. Watching hubby building a fire for our evening braai, listening to the sounds of the bush around us as the sun sank below the horison, I put my hands into my jacket pockets, a jacket I have'nt worn in well over 8 years, and pulled out a scrap of paper. On the one side, a grocery list which made me giggle, on the other side a name - Mokala Camelthorn tree house. And here I was, standing on the deck of the Camelthorn tree house! Mokala was proclaimed on the 19th June 2007, almost 10 years ago and I must have written that note after reading a Getaway magazine feature soon afterwards. A bucket list item ticked

Watching magnificent beasts arrive to drink at the waterhole below the treehouse is awe inspiring. Hearing jackels sing to each other through the night and lifting my head off the pillow as the solar light at the waterhole detected movement, to see what was visiting, lazing in bed until the sun penetrated the cold exterior, sipping on coffee and watching eland, wildebeest, zebra, warthog, giraffe and impala wander in to drink was pure heaven

A small park with a big heart, Mokala protects and breeds endangered and vulnerable species like roan antelope, disease-free buffalo, tsessebe and red-billed oxpeckers to name a few. There are no large preditors and only 2 of the big 5, however the varying landscape from grassland to koppies and forested areas makes for very interesting drives and great game viewing

Stofdam has a great bird hide at the waters edge and offers unique accomodation for all night game viewing with a braai area and shower to boot

The tree house is a very special place to get away from it all, to absorb all that the bush has to offer and switch off
